Wilma MacDougall was born in Tarbert, Loch Fyne and after gaining her BA(Hons) in Music went on to graduate from Homerton College, Cambridge with a PGCE in secondary music and mathematics. In Cambridge she sang with Jesus College Chapel Choir and performed regularly as a soloist in oratorio, recital and choral music. She then moved to Glasgow to study singing with Patricia MacMahon at the RSAMD in Glasgow where she won several scholarships, awards and competitions and graduated with an M.Mus.
Wilma leads a very busy solo career both as a recitalist and soloist with many orchestras and ensembles including the BBCSSO, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia, The Edinburgh Quartet and Paragon Ensemble. She has recorded and broadcast with BBC Radio and Borders Television with repertoire ranging from Bach’s Cantata No. 51 – Jauchzet Gott to contemporary repertoire.
Her wide repertoire ranges from contemporary music eg the British premiere of Stockhausen’s Sternklang directed by the composer to performances of oratorio in Germany, Denmark, Italy, Czeckoslovakia and throughout Britain. Diverse solo repertoire varies from recitals of lieder and French song, Edinburgh to “Scottish songs over the centuries”, London. Operatic roles have included Musetta in Puccini’s La Boheme, Michaela in Bizet’s Carmen, Grainne in the premiere of Bill Sweeney’s Gaelic opera An Turus and the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Magic Flute – all receiving excellent reviews.
Wilma also enjoys teaching singing and has pupils at The High School of Glasgow and Glasgow University. She is the vocal coach for the RSNO Junior Chorus, has taught at NYCoS and The Ulster Youth Choir and also takes masterclasses and choral workshops throughout the country. Recent concerts have included Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Rossini’s Petit Messe Solenelle and future performances include Haydn’s Creation in the North of England and a performance of Karl Jenkins “The Armed Man:Mass for Peace”.
