About Dvořák's Stabat Mater
This was his first setting of a religious text. Started in 1876, it was composed in memory of his daughter Josefa who died in September 1875. In the wake of the death of another of his daughters and his first-born son, Dvořák completed the score of the Stabat Mater towards the end of 1877.
The original score was published by Simrock in 1881, however the first Novello edition of 1883 included an organ accompaniment arranged by H.E. Button.
In this performance Strathaven Choral Society are echoing the 1883 edition, and are being accompanied by the organ of St Mary's Cathedral, Glasgow in the capable hands (and feet) of Michael Bawtree.
